Abstract

Morus in dica L. (M I-S36) is a potent sou rce of phytochemicals and its antioxidant activity atin vitro and ex vivo level is very well studied. Further to proceed with the animal studies, thesafety and efficacy of the different solvent extracts has to be evaluated at maximum dosage, i.e.,2 g/k g body weight ( BW) as per Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) guidelines. The acute toxicity study recorded no mortality or any toxic reaction in anygr ou p after 1 4 d. of ex tra cts admini str ati on at 2 g /k g BW. T h e extr acts aq u eo u s-MAq;dechlorophylised-MDc; 8 0% methanol-M8M did not cau se any behavioral or physical changes inexperimental rats. There was no significant (p0.0 5) difference in the biochemical parameters, analysed between the grou ps. Slight elevation in activity of alanine transaminase ( ALT ) andalkaline phosphatase (ALP) in MDc treated groups was observed, but did not exert any deleteriouseffect on the normal metabolism which was supported by the histopathology of liver. Extractsdid not induce any oxidative stress which is indicated by, no significant difference (p0.05 ) inthe control and experimental lipid peroxides ( LPO) and glu tathione valu es. T he seru m totalcholesterol and triglycerides were less than the control group. Histopathological studies showedno remark able changes in hepatocytes after 1 4 d. of oral administration of MAq, MDc and M8Mextracts. The study contributes in establishing the non-toxic quality parameters of M. in dica leafand the results indicate the non toxic effect of the extracts
