Abstract

Administration (ip) of b- endorphin 0.5ìg or 1 ìg / 0.1 ml/ rat/ day to pre-pubertal rats from post-natal day 15 to 21 resulted in a significant reduction in , i) gain in body weight, ii) relative weight of the ovary, uterus and Fellopian tubes, iii) mean number of primary, pre-antral and antral follicles and iv) serum levels of estradiol compared to controls. The changes were more drastic in higher dose of b- endorphin treated rats than in lower dose treated rats. In another experiment, administration of naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist, 1 ìg or 5 ìg /rat/day from post-natal day 15 to 21 along with 0.5ìg b- endorphin prevented alterations in ovarian follicular development and steroidogenic activity thereby indicating that ovarian alterations were specific actions of b - endorphin. The results for the first time indicate that b- endorphin interferes with ovarian follicular development in mammals.
