Kinetics of chlorination of anisole (S) by chloramine-B (CAB) inhy drochloric and perchloric acid media have been investigated. The rate of the reaction is first order dependent on [CAB]. Fractional order dependence on [substrate], [H+] and [Cl-] has been observed in both the media. Variation of ionic strength of the media and addition of the reaction product, benzene sulphonamide have negligible effect on the rate of the reaction. The effect of variation of ethanol on the reaction rate has been studied. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters have been evaluated. A rate law and mechanism have been proposed in accordance with the experimental observations.
