Abstract

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of microgram amounts of Nb(V) which is applicable to Nb stabilized stainless steels is described. The method is based on the formation of niobium(V) thiocyanate in the reaction between Nb(V) and thiocyanate in acid medium and its extraction into chloroform as an ion pair with imipramine hydrochloride. The molar absorptivity of the complex at 398 nm is 2.24 x 10 exp 4 L mole exp 1 cm exp 1 and spectrophotometric sensitivity is 0.0042 mu g Nb(V) cm exp 2 for absorbance = 0.001. This method can be applied for the determination of Nb in the range 0.2-3.5 mu g ml exp 1 . 28 ref.--AA
