Food retail is not a new phenomenon in India. It was there when people started their purchase. Now-a-days it has taken a new turn in this field. The important aspect of the current economic scenario is, the emergence of organized retail in India and we can find that there is a considerable growth in this sector in recent years and it is poised for much faster growth in the future. However, we find different opinions on the impact of the growth of organized retail in the country. The growth of organized retailing may have an adverse impact on retailers in the unorganized sector and so lots of research, field survey are been carried out by different organizations in this field. Detailed interviews were carried out for 20 retailers in Mysore city along with the 4 established modern retailers. An attempt is made to analyse the impact of food retail chains on kirana shops in Mysore city and a SWOT analysis is given for the development of the existing retailers and also for the new upcoming retailers who want to enter the field of retailing.
