Abstract

Water quality of the two lakes namely Arakere and Thaggahalli of Mandya was assessed by using the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME WQI). The physicochemical parameters used in the index calculation were dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, carbonate, bicarbonate, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, chloride, calcium, sodium, magnesium, turbidity and total dissolved solids. The CCME WQI analysis revealed that water quality of both the lakes are rated as poor. The results have shown that the conditions of these lakes are departed from natural or desirable levels in most of the physico chemical parameters.
