Abstract

An experimental study on the breakdown of K-cordierite into phlogopite and Mg-cordierite has been conducted at 100-150 MPa and in the temperature range of 650-900degreesC under hydrothermal conditions. Potassic cordierite served as starting material and was prepared by sintering the co-precipitated gel of composition K-0.2 Mg2Al4.2Si4.8O18 at 1200degreesC. All the experimental runs were carried out using Tuttle-Roy hydrothermal reactor vessels. The formation of phlogopite along with Mg-cordierite started at 700degreesC. This phlogopite with Mg-cordierite persisted up to 825degreesC and the phlogopite proportion considerably reduces beyond 825degreesC. At 850degreesC, Mg-cordierite was the only prominent phase with minor amount of phlogopite and K-feldspar. Above this temperature, traces of melt appear along with Mg-cordierite. From these experimental results, it is confirmed that synthetic K-cordierite (with 1.6 wt% of K2O) would break down to ideal phlogopite along with Mg-cordierite at very low pressure and temperature.
