Health is a priority goal in its own right, as well as a central input into economic development and poverty reduction. In 2005, all WHO Member States made the commitment to achieve ‘Universal Health Coverage’. The goal of Universal Health Coverage is to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need-prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation-without risk of financial ruin or impoverishment, now and in the future (WHO, 2013). It is projected that the urban population in India will reach 43.2 crore in 2021(NUHM, 2013). This situation will put lot of pressure on the urban infrastructure and immediate attention needs to be given for urban health issues, especially among the urban poor. The urban poor are suffering from higher Mortality Rates, underweight among children, lack of access to education, children missing immunization before completing one-year, being vulnerable to lung diseases and high incidence of vector borne diseases. Government of India has launched the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) to improve the health status of the urban population in general, but particularly of the poor and other disadvantaged sections, by facilitating equitable access to quality health care through a revamped public health system, partnerships, community based mechanism with the active involvement of the urban local bodies. The first phase of NUHM was recently launched in Karnataka. Flexibility is the hallmark of NUHM model. Goal, focus areas, core strategies and delivery model of NUHM are discussed in this paper.
