Abstract

The state has the responsibility of protecting, promoting and developing of languages speaking in Karnataka. The Kannada and Culture Directorate, Kannada Development Authority, Kannada Book Authority, Kannada Sahitya Parishad and Bhasha academies have different activities to promote languages in Karnataka. With the help of secondary data the study has analysed the trends in expenditure for promotion of languages in Karnataka. It has found from the study that expenditures of Institutions for promotional activities have been increased significantly in Karnataka. The plan and non-plan expenditures of Directorate of Kannada and culture and Kannada development authority have increased at higher rate. However expenditure for other languages was highly volatile. Matter of fact government of Karnataka has given equal importance to each bhasha academy without making any discrimination but the allocations for these academies are instable. Therefore, unlike central government, government of Karnataka has give support to promote all languages in Karnataka but allocation for Urdu, Tulu, Kodava, Beary, Konkani and Arebhasha should be increased to protect and promote these languages.
