Abstract

This paper is an attempt in explore the job opportunities for LIS professionals in online job portals. The study surveyed three of the most visited online job portals viz., Careerage.com, Timesjob.com and Naukri.com for four months in early 2008. Altogether 320 jobs were advertised in these portals. The analysis of the data showed that job portals probable are the best source for job hunters to find more job offerings than traditional sources such as newspapers and magazines. Corporate sector utilizes job portals to advertise job openings more than public sectors. Ninety percentage of jobs posted in job portals were in India. The study clearly shows that communication skills in English and computer literacy are the major additional skills expected of the candidates by the employers.
