Abstract

Collocational knowledge is considered as a prominent deficiency of language learners even at an advanced level. The objective of this study is realizing firstly: the impact of collocational training on ESL students� knowledge of collocation and secondly: which kinds of collocations are mostly used by the ESL students and which kinds are used at least. Seventy-five students from JSS College for Women in Mysore city, India took a part in this treatment. Students were divided into two control and experimental groups according to the design of the study. Instructor taught vocabulary to control group in traditional method while vocabulary were taught to the experimental group through collocational training. Data analysis represented that there was a significant improvement after treatment on experimental group and Adjective+Noun collocation is the kind of collocation that mostly used in pre and post-test but the number of it boosted considerably in post-test. Verb+Noun were the least collocation which utilized in pre-test whereas Noun+Noun were at least collocation used in post test. To recap, collocation training is pondered as the most ideal methods that can help to better learning English language.
