The role of agriculture in promoting economic development particularly in low income countries has been proved immense. Though the share of contribution of agriculture to domestic product has been reduced over the period, still agriculture has been played significant role in the form of producing food for the people of the country and other agricultural commodities to support industry and service sector. Having said this in the present paper an attempt has been made to estimate the impact of agricultural productivity on economic development. The time series data have been checked for stationarity and then used for further analysis. The Phillip Perron (PP) tests have conducted to check the stationarity of time series data. Jarque Bera (JB) tests have conducted to check the normality of the data. Econometric models have used to examine the impact of agriculture on economic development. It has been found from the study that in India, only wheat productivity and net irrigated area have significant influence in determination of agriculture and allied sector income. Wheat productivity has significant influence in determination of per capita net national income. Wheat productivity and net irrigated area have significant influence in determination of gross domestic product of India. At the same time agriculture and allied sector income has played significant role in determination of per capita and national income of India. Accordingly, it can be concluded that agriculture productivity has played moderate role but agriculture sector has played significant role in economic development of India.
