Abstract

The present study examines the attitude of B. Ed Student teachers towards teaching profession. The sample of 150 student teachers studying in different B. Ed Colleges of Mysuru city was selected by adopting stratified simple random sampling technique based on the background variables namely gender, stream, and type of college. Attitude towards teaching profession was assessed with the help of Teacher Attitude Inventory (TAI) developed and standardized by S. P. Ahluwalia (2006). Specific objectives of the study formulated were: 1. To study the attitude of student teachers towards teaching profession. 2. To find whether there is any significant difference between male and female student teachers in their attitude towards teaching profession. 3. To find whether there is any significant difference between Arts and Science students teachers in their attitude towards teaching profession. 4. To find whether there is any significant difference between student teachers belonging to Government, Private aided and Private un-aided colleges with respect to their attitude towards teaching profession. Descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The data obtained from the survey was analyzed using percentage analysis, ‘t’-test and one-way ANOVA. Findings of the study were: 1. A majority of student teachers that is 62.66% of them are found to possess highly favorable attitude towards teaching profession and only 37.34% of the student teachers are found to possess less favorable attitude towards teaching profession. 2. No significant difference was found between male and female student teachers with respect to their attitude toward teaching profession. 3. No Significant difference was found between arts and science student teachers with respect to their attitude towards teaching profession. 4. No significant difference was found between student teachers belonging to government, private aided and private unaided student teachers with respect to their attitude towards teaching profession.
