Abstract

The kinetics of oxidation of L-lysine, L-arginine (40 degrees C) and L-phenylalanine (50 degrees C) by manganese (III) ions has been studied in aqueous sulphuric acid medium. Manganese(III) solution was prepared by electrolytic method. The nature of the oxidizing species present in manganese(III) solutions was determined by spectrophotometric and redox potential measurements, The rate law, rate = kMn(III)](0)(x) AA](0) H+](-y) (where x and y are less than one) was observed. Effect of added anions such as Cl-, F-, P2O74-, HSO4-, varying ionic strength and solvent composition were studied. Solvent isotope studies in D2O medium were carried out. The dependence of reaction rate on temperature was studied and activation parameters were computed from the Arrhenius - Eyring plots. A mechanism consistent with the observed results is proposed and discussed.
