Abstract

Niobium forms a mixed ligand yellow complex with promethazine hydrochloride (PH) in the presence of thiocyanate at room temperature in hydrochloric acid medium. The ternary complex exhibits maximum absorbance at 400 nm. Its molar absorptivity is 2.72 x 10(4) 1 mol-1 cm-1. Beer's law is valid over the concentration range 0.2-3.0 ppm. The composition of the complex is 1:1:2 (metal:ligand:thiocyanate). The reagent has been used successfully for the spectrophotometric determination of niobium in ores.
