Abstract

Four new complexes of iron(III) formed by the reaction between diphenylpyraline and iron(III) chloride, nitrate, sulphate, or thiocyanate are described. The complexes are characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, IR, magnetic, and x-ray and electronic spectra, as well as conductivity measurements. An octahedral structure is proposed for all the new complexes in which chloride, nitrate, sulphate, or thiocyanate is attached to the metal ion in 1:2 (metal:ligand) ratio. It is observed that these complexes are more potent as antimicrobials than as free ligands.
