Abstract

Brickfields has a devastating impact on the environment andecosystem. This study is an effort to analyze the impact andconsequences of Brickfields on the environment and agriculturearound 4km within a union of Badarganj upazilla under the Rangpurdistrict, Bangladesh. The study employs the qualitative method in orderto offer an in-depth and elaborate description about the impact ofBrickfields on the local environment and agricultural land. The researchis based on both primary and secondary data. Through theinvestigation at the field level, it has been observed that, 8 Brickfieldshave been established adjacent to the main road of Badarganj-Rangpur-Parbatipur. These Brickfields caters to the demands of thenearby towns and villages at the cost of the public lives and crops. Ithas been observed that all the elements of the environment near theimmediate vicinity are under threat directly or indirectly by theBrickfields. Mentionably, the negative impact on arable land,agricultural crops, plants and trees are very serious and dangerous.Most of the people of the study area are either illiterate or less educatedbecause of which, they are not aware of the negative impact ofBrickfields. Brickfields are using topsoil from the nearby agriculturalland for making bricks and consequently contributing to lowerproductivity and soil degradation which is in the complete violationof various environmental laws. Besides, Brickfields is producing blacksmoke and poisonous gaseous substances that contribute to air pollution seriously damaging agricultural crops, plants, and publiclife. This violation of environmental law is obviously a crime. Thisstudy also offers a few suggestions to check these hazardous impactcaused by Brickfields.
