Abstract
In India, Primary Health Centers (PHCs) are the keystone ofhealthcare. PHCs play a vital role as the first level of contact and aconnection between individuals and the health system, bringinghealthcare delivery as close as possible to where people live and work.Primary health care services are incomplete if they lack appropriateand efficient referral systems to secondary and tertiary care hospitals. Also PHCs have to provide precautionary, remedial and rehabilitativecare. Even though there are numerous reasons for a meagerperformance of PHCs, almost all of them stem from weak stewardshipof the sector, which results in a deprived inducement structure. Primaryhealthcare being crucial, it is based on sensible, systematically soundand culturally appropriate methods. Information about it is madeavailable to individuals in the community through their fullinvolvement and at a cost the community and country can afford tosustain. This helps self-reliance and self-determination. This paper isbased on the author’s experience in various health care issues andprovides a solid platform for discussion about the role of PHC ininclusive health care for the marginalized section of society.
