Graphene oxide (GO) is sp2 bonded carbonaceous antibacterial substance acting by surface contact. Here, we assayed antibacterial efficiency of GO against two nosocomial pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in comparison with benzalkonium chloride (BKC), commonly used surface disinfectant. Using spread plate technique, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined and bactericidal efficiency was determined using bacterial growth curves. GO showed an MIC of 2.5% and MBC 5% against S. aureus and MIC of 5% against P. aeruginosa and remained bactericidal against S. aureus till 24 h as determined by growth curves. BKC showed bactericidal activity against both tested pathogens at higher concentration and longer exposure time. Polarising microscopy showed entry of GO flakes inside bacterial cells and membrane destruction. The study clearly demonstrated that GO successfully inhibited growth of tested pathogens and we propose to develop potent disinfectant for hard surfaces in hospital set-up.
