A new synthesis of 9,15-diketo-PGB1 methyl ester (8) has been developed. It involves the condensation of 1-iodo-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one (1) with dimethyl 3-oxoundecane-1, 11-dioate (2) to give the diester (3) which is converted into cyclopentenone derivative (6) in three steps. Sodium periodate-osmium tetroxide oxidation of 6 followed by Wadsworth-Emmons modification of Wittig reaction with sodium salt of dimethyl (2-oxoheptyl)phosphonate leads to 8.
