Abstract
Single crystals of cubic thulium oxide have been grown in strong sodium hydroxide, as well as strong nitric acid media under hydrothermal conditions. The crystals grown in alkaline solution have dodecahedral morphology while those grown under acid media show slender acicular morphology. The acicular morphology is explained on the basis of topotactic decomposition of thulium pentahydroxynitrate crystals.
