Abstract
Using X‐rays, DSC, and optical microscopy, the mixtures of cetyl alcohol and dimethyl sulfoxide are found to exhibit a mesophase. Smectic layer spacing measured using X‐ray diffraction photograph corresponds to twice the molecular length of cetyl alcohol showing that here the double layers of molecules are separated by dimethyl sulfoxide layers which is characteristic of lamellar mesophase (G). A phase diagram for this binary mixture is also given.
