Abstract

A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of phenothiazines in aqueous solution is described. The method was based on the oxidation of the drugs by potassium dichromate in acid solution to form an intense orange or reddish-violet radical cation. A graph of absorbance vs. concentration shows that Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range 20-250 μgml-1 with molar absorptivity ranging from 0.36 103 to 1.06103 l.mol-1 cm-1. The method was applied for the anal. of pure drugs and com. formulations containing the studied drugs. The commonly encountered excipients and additives do not interfere with the determination Results of the anal. agree well with those of the official methods.
