Abstract

The environmental degradation and industrial development trends have brought threats to the Persian Gulf security. This paper argues in favour of a revised framework of security that includes environment as a key determinant. Later, the paper explains the conceptual linkages between environmental degradation and security through several theoretical viewpoints. The paper primarily focuses on the threats to explain the idea of environmental security in the Persian Gulf. It also establishes a link among threats of current development to environmental security in the Persian Gulf region. This linkage helps to understand the relationship between environmental degradation and security threat. Critical approaches in this paper, discuss the outcomes related to development and their impacts on Persian Gulf environment which can lead to security threatening. The recent threats to the environmental security pertaining to development trends in the Persian Gulf consist of population growth, building ambitious coastal mega projects, hydrocarbon pollution, fishery resources, freshwater, desalination, wastewater and harmful algal blooms.
