Abstract

The new innovative Water Quality Index (IWQI) was compared to the NSF-WQI (National Sanitation Foundation Index calculated for five lakes of Mysore District. The IWQI has certain advantages over the NSF-WQI as well as over other indices. The reasons are that it is simple, normalization of values are not required and the variables selected are those required for evaluation of specific water quality Small numerical values are used in the index. Water quality index of less than two require remediation in the form of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) as is the case in Hadhinaru Lake and Yennehole Lake to a maximum extent. None of the five lakes studied had index values less than one and hence do not require any change in the Management Practices other than TMDL calculation. The index is suitable to lake ecosystems also.
