Abstract
Medicinal plants and their formulations are being used from thou sands of years in traditionalmedicine worldwide. Numerou s plants and polyherbal formulations are u sed for treatment ofhepatic diseases. In the present study, the hepatoprotective effect of aqu eous and 80% methanolextracts of Arto carpus a ltilis (Parkinson) Fosb. leaf (ALAE, ALM80) and bark (ABAE, ABM80)were stu died in rats with hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetra chloride (CCl4) and comparedwith standard dru g (Liv52 ) and untreated groups (CCL4). Activity of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and selected biochemicalparameters were estimated in serum. Glu tathione (GSH) content and lipid peroxidation (TBARS)were analysed in serum, liver and kidney homogenates. The AST, ALT and ALP levels in extracttreated grou ps were significantly (p0 .0 5 ) lower than CCL4 group. Pretreatment with ALAE,ALM80, ABAE and ABM80 restored total protein and albumin to near normal levels. The extractsimproved the antioxidant status considerably as reflected by low TBARS and high GSH values. Theresu lt s indicate that A. a ltili s leaf and bar k extra ctspossess po tent h epatop rotect ive effectagainst CCl4-induced hepatic damage in rats.
