Abstract

Rapid, sensitive and simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of nimesulide (NIME) is described. The method is based on the oxidation of promethazine hydrochloride (PMH) by N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) to give aradical cation, which is coupled with reduced nimesulide to produce a green product which has a λ m a x of 610 nm and is stable for three days. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0.4-8.0 μg ml-1. The method is successfully employed for the determination of nimesulide in pharmaceutical preparations and common excipients used as additives in pharmaceuticals do not interfere in the proposed method. A suitable reaction mechanism is proposed for the product formation.
