Abstract

The kinetics of the title oxidns. [to give HOCH2CHO or MeCH(OH)CHO] were detd. in 0.01-0.8M aq. HCl, contg. RuCl3, at 35° or in 0.001-0.012M aq. NaOH, contg. OsO4, at 50°. HCl is also a reaction catalyst at 0.01-0.15M concns. Salt effects, ionic strength, and medium dielec. const. effects support RuCl2+(I) as the active catalytic species in the acid reactions in which the decompn. of an HCl complex of chloramine-T (II) and I is rate detg. In base, II is the active oxidizing agent and the reaction transition state is a cyclic complex contg. II and OsO4. [on SciFinder(R)]
