Abstract

The kinetics for the oxidn. of cinnamyl alc. by chloramine-T in the presence of HCl was studied at 273.0-280.3 K. The reaction shows a 1st-order dependence on chloramine-T, 2nd-order in H+, and is independent of the substrate. Ionic strength and added p-toluenesulfonamide had little influence on the rate of action. The mechanism involves attack of formed H2OCl+ on the substrate in a fast step to form the reaction products, cinnamaldehyde and p-toluenesulfonamide. [on SciFinder(R)]
