Abstract

The kinetics of oxidn. of NH2OH.HCl by chloramine-T (CAT) in the presence of HCl (0.04-0.10M) and HClO4 (0.03-0.12M) was studied at 0°. The reaction shows 1st-order dependence on [CAT] and [NH2OH] but inverse 1st-order dependence on [H+]. Ionic strength and added p-toluenesulfonamide have no effect on the rate of oxidn. Chloride ion catalyzes the reaction. The rates show a pos. dielec. effect. The energy and entropy of activation were calcd. A mechanism involving interaction of unprotonated NH2OH and N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide, giving an intermediate complex in a slow step, is suggested. [on SciFinder(R)]
