Abstract

Media shape the political process and is responsible for seeking publicparticipation in political process. Media power in politics is not a mythbut a reality as media continues to have impact on political activitiesand in influencing public opinion. Media are central to the politicalfunctioning but do politicians consider media as dependable sourcesthey turn to and trust and do they cite media reports in their discussions,presentations and political conversations? Studies about what are thepolitician’s news habits and what are their media and news preferencesand how they connect with media provide insight into influences ofmedia on politician’s news habits. Do politicians express more credibilityof media is a point worth pondering as media has proved to be doubleedged sword. This study is based on a survey conducted with politiciansbelonging to the State of Karnataka. The findings reveal that all therespondent politicians (100%) were reading the newspaper, thetraditional media. They attached a lot of importance to reading thenewspaper. All the respondents irrespective of the nature of membershipand their education level, were found reading newspaper daily.However, they have rated the credibility of newspaper as moderate.Nevertheless, Newspaper still continues to be one of the main sourcesof news for politicians.
