Abstract

The petr. ether ext. of the seeds of Moringa pterigosperma gave a yellow fatty oil (31.5%) of d30 0.8984, n30 1.46524, I no. 64.20. The freed fatty acids were sepd. into solid (26.85%) and liquid (72.2%) acids by Twitchell's Pb salt method. The solid acids were analyzed by the technique of vacuum distn. as Me esters. The compn. of the solid acids was palmitic, 37.0; stearic, 29.0; and behenic 33.5%. The liquid acids, analyzed by the Br method of Eibner and Muggenthaler (Lewkowitsch, Chemical Technology and Analysis of Oils, Fats and Waxed, Vol. I, 6th Ed., p. 585 (C.A. 15, 2007)), show: palmitic, 9.3; oleic, 65.7; stearic, 7.4; and behenic, 8.6%. The unsaponifiable matter gave, after crystn. from alc., white crystals, m. 133-4°, which gave color reactions of phytosterols; acetyl deriv., m. 126-7°. [on SciFinder(R)]
