A simple, accurate and rapid spectrophotometric method has been developed for the assay of ritodrine (RTH) and pentazocine hydrochlorides (PZH) in bulk drug and their pharmaceutical preparations. The method is based on oxidative condensation of the drugs with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol in the presence of cerium(IV). The resulting coloured products are measured at 510 nm for RTH and at 525 nm for PZH and are stable for I h. The optimum reaction conditions and other analytical parameters are evaluated., A study of the effect of commonly associated excipients and additives do not interfere with the determinations. A statistical analysis of the results indicates that the method is precise and accurate.
