Abstract
Addition of triethylammonium formate followed by commercial zinc dust to a solution of, azo compounds in methanol offers a general and convenient Means for reducing, both symmetrical and unsymmetrical azo compounds to the corresponding amine(s) at room temperature. Many other reducible and hydrogenolyzable groups Such as OCH3, OH. COOH, CH3, COCK3, SO3Na, and halogens are tolerated. The reduction is fast, clean, high yielding. and inexpensive compared to earlier methods.
