Abstract

The use of energy has both negative and positive impacts on environment. Governments have taken measures to promote use of clean energy for cooking and household purposes. The present study verified the use of energy sources for cooking and household purposes with the help of first hand data collected from two districts of Karnataka. The study has estimated the impacts of region, location and occupation on use of energy. It has found from the study that majority of the households have used wood for cooking and household purposes and location and occupation have made their impact on the use. Accordingly, use of wood will not differ between Bagalkot and Mandya districts but within the districts rural households, agriculture farmers and non-farm labour have largely used wood for cooking household purposes. At the same time spending on wood is significantly high in Bagalkot, urban areas, business persons, daily wage earners and non farm labourers for whom wood is freely available. Relatively and significantly less number of households have used gas and the use of gas is significantly high in Mandya, urban and among business and salaried persons as reviled by Probit results. At the same time spending on gas is significantly high in Mandya in urban areas and among business and salaried persons. Therefore, the free access to wood has made negative impact on environment and eco-system and at the same time the government policies and programmes have failed to effectively influence the use of gas for cooking and household purposes.
