Abstract

This essay traces the modern history of the Kannada-language vachanas (medieval prose-poems) in colonial Karnataka in the early twentieth century, and its complex relationship with the Lingayath community. The essay moves away from the more conventional tropes of nation and nationalism to explore the multiple ways in which the modern self and forms of community are shaped by 'universal literature'. What draws our attention towards the vachanas as they evolved during the colonial period are the contradictory processes of projecting them as both sectarian and universal.
