Abstract

Cataloguing has been undoubtedly a core activity of all kinds of libraries. As an activity it existed even before Iibrarianship as a profession took a shape. Its history tied closely with the history of libraries. Catalogues existed in form of some ordered list or inventory in the very ancient libraries. The cataloguing involved the recording details such as titles, donors of books, size, colour etc. Sometimes catalogues of those days were just a jumbled list of the holdings. Early catalogues were written by hands till the invention of printing press in 17th century.Perhaps printing press brought the major shift in the production of catalogues.
