Abstract

Metadata are required for management and discovery of resources. The accuracy and consistency of metadata have always been of concern to the library community. With the development of Institutional Repositories(IRs), newer metadata standards such as Dublin Core, Mods, etc. are being implemented. The present study examines the diligence of fifteen institution al repositories in terms of their metadata. The results show mixed findings. While the accuracy of data entered in the repositories are found to be good, the specificity of the usage of data elements are not so satisfactory. Institutions have to develop a 'Metadata Policy ' and the staff require straining in the proper use of metadata standard. It is also suggested "that a detailed study is required to throw more light on the issue.
