Abstract

This paper applies Cloze test to assess the readability of the newspapers The Hindu and The Tines of India. The results obtained using the Cloze procedure (the Cloze test of multiple choice type where answers are provided and the testees has select the appropriate answer for each of the blanks given the passage) are compared with results obtained by using Flesch-Kincaid formula Reading ease for the same passages. Further the passages were analysed for answering the average sentence length and the word length (Average number of syllables per word) the basic linguistic variables that affect the readability. These results are again compared with the Cloze test for the respective passage. The results have been interpreted in detail and conclusions have been arrived at, the results indicate that The Hindu news reports are easier to read and understand than those of The Times of India.
