A new organic nonlinear optical material 3-[(1-(2-phenylhydrazinylidene)ethyl]-2 H-chromen-2-one was synthesized and needle shaped crystals were obtained by slow evaporation method using acetone as a solvent. The grown crystal was subjected to single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the crystal system was found as triclinic system with non-centrosymmetric space group P1. The crystallinity of the grown crystal was confirmed by the powder XRD study. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies confirmed the presence of functional groups in the sample. The optical transmittance spectrum shows that the crystal is highly transparent in the visible wavelength range. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to show the surface morphology of the grown crystal. The chemical composition of the grown crystal was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The thermal stability of the crystal was studied by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) and it was found that the material is stable up to 196 °C. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the crystal confirmed by Kurtz and Perry powder test was found to be 3.3 times as that of KDP.
