Abstract

A study was designed to determine the phytochemical constituents, antibacterial and antioxidantproperties of different solvent extracts of Argyreia o syrensis Roth. which isone of the importantethnomedicinal plants of Western Ghats. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the extractsh owedth e p resence o f a lk al oid s, sterol s, sap oni ns, tr iterpenoi ds, fla von oid s, tan nin s,carbohydrates, resins and glycosides, while proteins were absent in all the solvent extracts. An tib act eria l a cti vit y o f t he p lan t extr act offered p otenti al anti bacter ial pr operties with amaximu m zone of inhibition 2 6 mm in ethyl acetate extract of fru it against P. a eru g in o sa,followed by 2 5 mm inhibition observed against E. co li by the methanolic leaf extract. It wasevident from the results that the plant possessed antibacterial activity against all the test pathogens. The MIC of the plant extracts revealed that a minimum of 0.156 mg/ ml and a maximum of 0.625mg/ ml of the extracts were required to inhibit the test pathogens. Further, the studies on DPPHradical scavenging activity confirmed that the plant extracts contained natu ral antioxidants, which was dose dependent. The results obtained in this study justify the use of A. osyrensis bytraditional medical practitioners for variou s ailments.
