Abstract

Kinetics of oxidation of cysteine by chloramine-T (CAT) in HClO4 and H2SO4 acid media has been investigated at 303 K. The oxidation behaviour is similar in both the media and obeys the rate law, rate = kCAT]S]H+](x-) where x is less than unity. The rate is unaffected by the added SO42-] and ClO4-] ions. Addition of p-toluenesulphonamide had no effect on the reaction rate. Variation Addition of p-toluenesulphonamide had no effect on the reaction rate. Variation of ionic strength and dielectric constant of the medium on the rate of reaction has been studied. Activation parameters for the reaction have been computed from the Arrhenius plot. The protonation constant of monochloramine-T is found to be 110+/-1.
