Abstract

An indirect, fast, sensitive spectrophotometric method for the assay of phenothiazines is described. The procedure is based on the oxidation of phenothiazines by a known excess of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) in the presence of sulphurie acid. The absorbance of unreacted oxidant is measured at 425nm. The absorbance decreases linearly with increasing concentration of phenothiazines. The systems obey Beer's law for 0-2250 mu g in an overall aqueous solution of 10 mi. The method has been applied successfully to the determination of phenothiazines in pure and in pharmaceutical samples. The reliability of the assay has been established by parallel determination by the British Pharmacopoeia method.
