Abstract

The structure 4-cyano-4'-decylbiphenyl is reported in our paper on page 83 of this volume.(1) To achieve greater insight into molecular packing in homologous series of 4-cyano-4-n-alkylbiphenyl(2-3) the structure of the higher homolog 4-cyano-4'-n-undecylbiphenyl was determined. The title compound (Figure 1) was recrystallised before mounting it on a diffractometer. The needle like crystals undergo transformation to a smectic A phase at 326 K which finally becomes an isotropic liquid at 330.5 K.
