Kinetics of oxidation of indigocarmine (IC) by chloramine-B (CAB) and HOCl in buffer medium (pH 2-6) have been studied at 30 degrees C, spectrophotometrically at lambda(max) 610 mm. The reaction is first order with respect to IC](o) in the pH range 2-6. The observed second order reaction with respect to CAB], at pH 2 is pH dependent. It decreases in the pH range 2-6 and is first order at pH 6. Addition of the reaction product PhSO(2)NH(2) retarded the rate, but halide ions and variation of ionic strength of the medium had no influence on the reaction. A two pathway mechanism has been proposed. Activation parameters have been evaluated from the Arrhenius plots. The disproportionation constant of PhSO(2)NHCl (monochloramine-B) has been calculated. Results observed with CAB at pH 6 are similar to those obtained with HOCl in the pH range 2-6.
