Abstract

Kinetics of chloramines-T (CAT) oxidation of cinnamaldehyde in acid medium and in alkaline medium (catalysed by OsO4) have been investigated at 313 K. In acid medium, a Michaelis-Menten kinetics is obeyed with a first order dependence of rate on [CAT] and a fractional order in [aldehyde] which becomes zero at higher [aldehyde]. Rate dependence on [H+] varies from inverse fractional to fractional order. In alkaline medium the reaction in first order each in [CAT] and [Os(VIII)] and inverse first order in [OH-]. Solvent isotope effect, effects of added chloride ion, and p-toluenesulphonamide and varying ionic strength and dielectric constant of medium have been investigated. Activation parameters have been computed.
