Abstract

Two simple and accurate methods are described for the determination of N-substituted phenothiazine drugs. The spectrophotometric method involves the oxidation of the sulphur atom in these drugs with potassium iodate in acid medium with the liberation of iodine and subsequent extraction with carbon tetrachloride followed by measuring the absorbance at 520 nm. In the titrimetric method, a known excess volume of potassium iodate is added and, after a specified time, the residual reagent is determined iodometrically. The stoichiometry of the reaction was assessed and a proposal for the reaction pathway is presented. The proposed methods were applied to the analysis of pharmaceutical preparations containing these drugs.
