The intensity and spectral distribution of the backscattered photon distribution in the gamma ray spectra of 137Cs(662 keV), 54Mn(840 keV), 65Zn(1114 keV) and 60Co(1170 keV, 1330 keV) have been measured using a NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer with a heavy lead shield and without it. Contrary to expectation the intensity of the backscattered peaks is found to show a decreasing tendency when the detector is within the lead shield. This change, however, is found to become smaller with increasing energy of the incident gamma rays. © 1980.
