Pooled Alkaloid Ext. (PAE) isolated from fractionation of methanol ext. of leaves of P. juliflora (Sw.) DC. was tested in vivo against sorghum seed biodeterioration during storage for a 6-mo period. The percent incidence of seedborne fungal pathogens, seed germination and seedling vigor, total water-sol. protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and dry matter content of the treated seeds were recorded at the interval of 1- through 6-mo period. The treatment revealed that the PAE treatment of seeds significantly reduced percent incidence of molds and mold-induced biodeterioration up to 180-days storage along with significant increase in seed germination and seedling vigor up to 90 days. Carbohydrate, protein, lipid, and dry matter losses were also not obsd. in the treated seeds while significant loss of all the parameters was obsd. in untreated control seeds. The result of the present study is highly encouraging in developing herbal remedy for seedborne fungal diseases and biodeterioration of grains during storage. [on SciFinder(R)]
