Abstract

Percentage of pollen germination and rate of tube growth of 2 weeds viz., Malvastrum coromandelianum and Sida acuta, and a medicinally important plant Catharanthus roseus were studied under varied concn. of pendimethalin viz., 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 μg/mL. Pollen showed max. percentage of germination in Brewbaker and Kwack's medium devoid of pendimethalin. While in the medium supplemented with it, a decline in the percentage germination of pollen and tube length were obsd. with an increase in the concn. of pendimethalin. The pollen of M. coromandelianum and S. acuta showed no signs of germination (incubated <12 h) at 2.5 μg/mL. However, the pollen of C. roseus was found to be resistant even at 2.5 μg/mL. In addn., at higher doses pendimethalin suppressed the growth of pollen tube in all 3 taxa. The tip of pollen lube becomes swollen and show bursting in the treated when compared to the control. From the present study, it is clear that pendimethalin has inhibitory effect on pollen germination, as well as on tube growth. At higher concn. it completely checks the pollen germination and hence pollen could be considered as indicator of pollution. [on SciFinder(R)]
